WHY IS POST-SURGERY AFTERCARE NEEDED?

All surgeries, orthopedic, plastic / cosmetic all produce swelling to some extent because it is part of the body’s normal healing process. Some cosmetic surgeries, such as liposuction, tummy tucks, and BBL, disrupt the natural pathways taken by the lymphatic system because of the location of the surgery. Other regions of the body, such as the nose after rhinoplasty or a face lift produce swelling that can last for a long time—even up to one year. However, because of the extensive areas of disruption, tummy tucks and liposuction procedures are usually the cosmetic surgeries with the greatest amount of lymphatic swelling.

When the lymph drifts out into surrounding tissue after a surgical procedure which disrupts the normal lymphatic pathways, swelling is the result, . In the book "A Patient's Guide to Liposuction", Dr Schafer says "swelling is caused by an accumulation of excess fluid in the treated tissue". Swelling is normal, but if you are a proactive person who wants to get back to your normal life, there's no reason to just wait patiently until it subsides on its own. Take action to avoid the following side effects by getting Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage, (MLD).

THE BENEFITS OF MLD AFTER SURGERY:

  • MLD removes metabolic waste, excess water, toxins, bacteria, large protein molecules and foreign substances from the tissues.
  • MLD, through its gentle rhythmical precise hand movements, alleviates pain by greatly reducing the pain signals sent to the brain.
  • MLD relaxes the sympathetic nervous system, thus helping to relieve stress.
  • MLD supports and enhances the action of the immune system.
  • MLD helps the body to heal more quickly from surgical trauma.
  • MLD helps to minimize scar formation.

Clearly, Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage is helpful in the prevention of excessive swelling and pain which will make your overall healing from cosmetic surgery much faster and more comfortable.

THE FOLLOWING SIDE EFFECTS OF SURGERY TYPICALLY OCCUR:

  •  Lymphatic fluid build-up in surgical area-this is relieved by Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  •  Skin adhesion onto the underlying tissue, which leads to movement restriction. This condition can be corrected with Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  •  Excessive skin hardening-skin can be softened with Manual Lymphatic Drainage
  • Scar tissue, fibroid lumps and bumps. This can be reduced and lumps and bumps corrected with Fibrosis Therapy
  • Liposuction/tummy tuck  leaves lumps because of the fat cells not removed. This can be corrected with Fibrosis Therapy
  • Loose skin-can be tightened and renewed using hands on Skin Tightening Fibrosis Therapy
  • Cellulite looks worse: this is because cellulite is not removed by liposuction, and cellulite surgery is quite often the wrong decision.

1. Manual Lymphatic Drainage - MLD

WHAT IS MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE?

Using sequences of gentle massage strokes, manual lymphatic drainage helps to stimulate the flow of fluid through the lymphatic system, thus relieving swelling. Surgeons SHOULD ALWAYS recommend that their patients supplement their recovery with manual lymphatic drainage as early as possible, ideally within the first few day’s post-surgery.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF

MANUAL LYMPHATIC DRAINAGE?

  • Speeds up the healing process by: reducing swelling and bruising, increasing the removal of cellular debris and other waste from the area (including free fats), reducing local inflammation, and decreasing the risk of infection by improving the immune response.
  • Decreases scarring and the build-up of fibrotic nodules (hard lumps), and consequently improve skin texture and tone. MLD significantly increases the flow of fluid in lymphatic vessels in normal individuals.
  • Decreases pain, sensitivity and touch-avoidance by speeding healing and providing a gentle and pleasing massage.  It’s also important to note that pain is not a side-effect of manual lymphatic drainage massage when administered correctly.

2. Fibrosis Treatment

What is fibrosis of the skin after liposuction?

After any kind of surgery, the skin can build up adhesion's. These adhesion's are present in the process of scarring and are an unnatural form of bands which abnormally connects two or more surfaces of tissues and disturb the body functions. Such adhesion's may arise from surgical procedures, trauma, and radiations during the process of wound repair, These adhesion's are made up of cells and tissues. They can hinder organ movements and may block blood supply and nutrition to the organs, causing pain and decreasing organ functioning. Fibrosis won’t present itself until about 4 weeks post-surgery. It is not possible to acknowledge it as such prior to this point of time. Our therapist uses several tools and time tested methods to achieve the elimination of fibroid tissue.
